Navigating Adversity: The Art of Resilient Leadership

Resilient leadership requires the leader to embrace change and, at times, adversity. Here, we discover the mindset that sets the resilient leader apart from those who lack the know-how to be resilient. The purpose of Navigating Adversity: The Art of Resilient Leadership is to understand resilience better and empower leaders to transform every obstacle into moments of growth.

What is Resilient Leadership? Resilient leadership refers to "the ability to anticipate, prepare for, respond, and adapt to incremental change and sudden disruptions" in a way that allows one not only to survive but to thrive (Denyer, 2019). It's about being foresighted, adaptable, and having the capacity to recover quickly from difficulties.

Resilient Leadership Defined. Resilient leadership embodies practices that effectively equip leaders to navigate foreseen and unforeseen challenges. Resilience is about bouncing back from setbacks. It's about learning, growing, and becoming more hardy through those experiences.

Defining 'Resilient.' According to the Oxford English Dictionary (2023), "resilient" originates from the Latin word resilire—meaning to spring back or rebound. In leadership, resilience refers to the mental, emotional, and strategic flexibility that enables leaders to withstand pressure, adapt to change, and emerge from adversity stronger than before. It is often characterised by maintaining a positive attitude, recognising opportunity, and keeping an open mind in the face of setbacks or failures.

In the original version of this article (December 18, 2023), I noted that "resilience is not innate; it's a skill that can be developed and strengthened over time through experience and deliberate practice." With continued study of resilience, I have refined my stance. While I still believe resilience grows through our experiences, mindset shifts, and intentional practice, I am now reconsidering the role of innate factors. Though I am neither a biologist nor a psychologist, there appears to be a tendency for some individuals to demonstrate a natural capacity to "bounce back." In contrast, others may find this more challenging. I studying further as an exploration of the innateness of resilience alongside the learned experience of resiliency.

Defining 'Leadership.' Leadership is "an influence relationship among leaders and followers who intend real changes that reflect their mutual purposes" (Rost, 1993).

The Importance of 'Ability' in Resilient Leadership. The word "ability" in the context of resilient leadership underscores the competence and skill set required to lead effectively under varying circumstances. It signifies a leader's inherent qualities and acquired skills through learning and experience. The ability in resilient leadership is about:

  • Anticipation is the action of looking forward to or predicting challenges and opportunities (Oxford English Dictionary, 2024, "Anticipation").

  • Preparation is the action of preparing for or creating contingency plans for unforeseen events (Oxford English Dictionary, 2024, "Preparation").

  • Resolution is the action of resolving something or addressing challenges (Oxford English Dictionary, 2024, "Resolution").

  • Adaptation is the action or process of adapting one thing to fit with another or suit specific conditions (Oxford English Dictionary, 2024, "Adaptation").

Resilient leadership is demonstrated in actions. Ability is a quality that makes action possible. The leader must have sufficient power (role authority) or proficiency (that is, capability and capacity to do ) (Oxford University Press, 2023, "Ability").

Why is Resilient Leadership Important? Leaders exist in a rapidly changing, information-driven world. The complexities of uncertainty are inevitable. A leader who understands resilience is equipped to work through turbulent times. Others with less resiliency adeptness cannot engage adversity with the same precision. Resilient leadership is an existential requisite in a 21st-century organisation.

Defining 'Change.' Change is the action or process of making or becoming different; alteration, variation. Further change is an alteration of the state or quality of something (Oxford University Press, 2023, "Change"). In the context of leadership, 'change' refers to any alteration in internal or external circumstances in which an organisation operates, including technological advancements, shifts in market demands, regulatory changes, or internal restructuring. Ansari (2023) discusses the constancy of transition, noting, "Change can be gradual or sudden, predictable or unexpected." Transitions require a response from leaders, who must guide their organisations to adapt, evolve, and often transform to remain relevant and successful.

Defining 'Challenges.' A challenge is a difficult or demanding task, especially one seen as a test of one's abilities or character (Oxford University Press, 2024, "Challenge"). Challenges in leadership present themselves in the form of obstacles, problems, or complicated situations requiring a reasoned approach toward resolution.

Defining 'Uncertainties.' Uncertainty is the state or character of being uncertain in mind. Leaders encounter moments in which they are in a state of doubt. It may be simply a want of assurance or confidence. Uncertainties are inherently points of hesitation marked by situations of irresolution (Oxford University Press, 2024, "Uncertainties"). As leaders, we exist in this realm more often than is supposed. Leadership is, by nature, marked by uncertainty. Uncertainty refers to the unknown about outcomes, consequences, and future trends, which may be erratic and even unidentified for some time.

The Essential Nature of Resilient Leadership. Resilient leadership is essential. Leaders adept at resiliency are more likely to lead well. Encountering challenges is a given. No leader will be without challenges during their tenure, regardless of the organisation's purpose or location. Those who lead with resiliency have the potential to guide the organisation through times of upheaval.

Resilient leadership is certainly about weathering wild storms. But it is more than simple endurance. It's about navigating the storm with skilful engagement. It is about discovering better ways of engaging from each professional and life experience. The intended result is about emerging more hardy and conditioned for the future. Resilient leaders work purposefully to design a culture of adaptability, ongoing learning, and dexterity (i.e., mental skill and quickness, as in the case of intellectual or creative tasks). These behaviours, when nurtured, position the organisation for sustained success regardless of the exterior or interior shifts, challenges, and uncertainties it faces.
