About IGHL Health Initiatives™

IGHL Health Initiatives and Dr Junior Mudji of Vanga are engaged in two vital initiatives in Kwilu Province, Democratic Republic of Congo.

Reducing Surgical Site Infection and Antibiotic Consumption for Safer Births in Vanga, Kwilu Province, Democratic Republic of Congo

Hygiene is fundamental to safe childbirth and protecting mothers and newborns from life-threatening infections. Improving delivery room hygiene helps reduce surgical site infections, lower antibiotic use, and enhance maternal and newborn care.

IGHL Health Initiatives and Dr Junior Mudji are working together to develop sustainable hygiene interventions in the Kwilu Province of the Democratic Republic of Congo. The initiative centres on ensuring that every mother and baby receive the safest care possible.

Dr Junior Mudji, a leading physician in the region, started the quality improvements in the maternity ward through an initial study centred on the patient's journey. Two necessary actions have been implemented.

Every woman has a pre-delivery shower—“Cleanliness before childbirth is a simple, effective way to prevent infections and promote safe deliveries.” —Dr Junior Mudji

A specific hygiene procedure for C-section patients—“A specialised procedure has been implemented in the maternity ward for those going into a C-section to avoid surgical site infections. We have already seen improved recovery and reduced complications.” —Dr Junior Mudji

Practical, low-cost hygiene interventions are already saving the lives of mothers and newborns. With ongoing support from nonprofit and corporate partners, IGHL Foundation and Dr Junior Mudji are developing best practice protocols and expanding training in clinics across Kwilu Province, DRC—ensuring lasting improvements in maternal and newborn care.
